Season 1 Episode 7 The Monogomists

This episode is particularly striking for how emotionally immature Carrie can be, and how terrible it is when Big strings her along.  It isn't as bad as the wedding in Season 2 when Carrie thought he was through with this particular brand of commitment issues, but it is still terrible.

It begins with a crowded street, so many of the early episodes of the show involve huge swathes of crowds and tons of people and it feels so messy and crowded, in a very honest New York way.  The only way it'd be more realistic if they showed New York on trash day.  Yikes.

Carrie and Mr. Big are walking in each others arms and Narrator Carrie is talking about how much she is in love with Big, she has completely been absorbed in the gravitational pull that is Mr Big. Her life rotates so much around him, that she completely neglects her friends and they seem rather hurt and slightly offended when they *do* catch up a time later.

Samantha is obsessed with finding an apartment, Miranda is working like a crazy person at her law firm, as usual.

Charlotte is seriously dating a man (and his dog).  Really, the entire relationship that is shown, the dog is like *right there watching them make out* and it is weird.  it's weird right?  I can't even sleep in the same room as my cat, let alone let her watch me blow my husband. Speaking of BJs, that is the only problem that Charlotte has with this Mr. Perfection (and dog)-- the blow job tug of war.  I've never won at that particular game.  :p Charlotte refuses to blow her perfect boyfriend and it is a problem.

The girls have a classic four-way conversation about BJs. I think this is the first instance of a four-way on the show that confused me.  There are many others and I'll try to get to all of them as I see them.

See, the women are talking about BJs, and then out of nowhere, Miranda mentions oral sex, which I take to mean general fellatio since they were talking about that.  She says "oral sex is like god's gift to women, you can get off without worrying about getting pregnant"  But instead of immediately talking about cunnilingus, they continue to talk about BJs, and it is after a few turns that they come back around to talking about reciprocation. It's like her comment was in the completely wrong part of the conversation.  In context it makes it sound like *she* gets off from giving guys BJs, and that is just stupid.

But I digress.

Everyone is on the same page by the end.. if you're gonna get all choked up about it, just don't do it.  good advice.  :nods:

Charlotte's conclusion: She tells the guy that she doesn't want to give him blow jobs, because she hates them. He says he's going to have to get them elsewhere and so she dumps him.  The dog is finally happy.

On the way out of the restaurant, Carrie sees Mr Big with another woman.  She is surprised to see him, since apparently he said that he had a work thing, but it turns out, it's a date!  She is fuming!  How could he have time, emotional energy, and the capacity for dating other people?! She does her usual slightly passive aggressive thing to get the message across that she isn't ok with this and leaves in a huff.

In the next scene, she is pacing and smoking in her apartment alone, seemingly writing her article for the week.  Narrator Carrie says that she and Big never discussed exclusivity.  well, there you go. end of the episode.

j/k.

She asks in her little column thingy: "has monogamy become too much to expect?"  And I want to shake her.  You and he haven't discussed this!  At some point, exclusivity should be brought up.. and hey!  what a great time to bring it up.  So she talks with him about it and explains her feelings and the episode is over.  oop. j/k again.

Samantha is searching for an apartment, going with a real estate agent who expects her to be exclusive with her. Sam of course isn't a monogamist, so she goes off with a different agent who shows her other places.  I call bullshit on this.  Usually you have to sign a form that says that you won't work with another broker before they start showing you places.  We did anyway.  Maybe not?  Anyone have experience in New York?

She and the other agent actually do it in some of the apartments that he shows her.  So, it's kinda hot.  :p

Sam's conclusion: She is caught in the act of doing it with the other real estate agent by the original real estate agent.  She and he are actually in the apartment that she ends up buying, and I don't know why but I just noticed how remarkably TINY the apartment seems.  Carrie's always seems so sprawling, mostly a closet, TBH, but at least the bedroom is separate, visually, from the kitchen.  But anyway.  Moving back to the original plot:

In the next scene, Carrie is having lunch with Stanford.  They are talking about the topic du jour, and he says that monogamy is on the way out again.  Cause of the new Millennium.  How quaint. A friend of Stanny's comes up to them at the bar to talk about his new book and how he was named one of the coolest people under 30 and to invite them to his cool party for people under 30.  He flirts a bit with Carrie and she is unimpressed.

Then she's bothered by the fact that she's unimpressed.  It is really pathetic.  At home, she gets a call from Big, who reminds her of their date.  She says in a soliloquy that she thinks she sounds shrill while trying to sound non-committal, and Mr Big says that he misses her.  It is kind of sweet, kinda cocky.. you know the way powerful men are.  yughck.

Narrator Carrie says there are so many things she wants to ask him but won't.  for whatever reason.  She'll ask Miranda instead.  She'll ask if "I miss you" was Mr Big's way of saying "sorry" (It's not) and whether Big actually has feelings for her or if everything that is happening is just projections of her feelings for him.  It is just.. weird and ridiculous.  She went out on a ledge with her feelings, thinking he was on the same page and he's not.  That's all, he's at the same place he was, only now he can probably "see" how far out she is and is doing nothing to correct the imbalance.

While they're eating, Skipper shows up with a girl in tow, and they brag a bit about the food they ate together and Miranda is offended by her presence.  Even though she had previously broken it off with him for being young and immature and available to her.

Miranda calls him later on to ask him out.  She is screened by him, because he is currently in his girlfriend... but he hardly notices, he picks up the phone when he recognizes Miranda's voice and accepts the invite to dinner sometime and then *breaks up with girlfriend*.

"You're breaking up with me while you're still inside of me?!"

Poor woman!  D:

Miranda's conclusion: She and Skipper have a fun date, they fuck, and Skipper reveals that he broke up with his girlfriend the minute that Miranda had called.  Miranda calls him insane, she isn't ready for that kind of commitment!  How very dare he!

I really dislike how Earnest people are shamed.  In general.  Here, in life.  It is a shame.  Enthusiasm is the BEST.  DAMMIT.

On the date with Big, some woman accosts him with her mouth and asks for her passport back.  Carrie has mentally counted at least two women that Big is currently dating and she is getting incredibly pissed about it.  A man comes up to chat with them, a friend of Big's, and Big starts to introduce her but he is interrupted by the guy calling Carrie "Julie".  Carrie doesn't take it well. Big tries to pick up the mood and take away some of the awkwardness by describing Carrie and her amazing job.  The man says that dating Big is a great move if she's looking for material.

"Are we dating? I thought we were just sleeping together" she says, immaturely.

"Well, I'm sure after tonight," Big tries to recover the conversation, "we won't be doing much of either"

They finally have a small conversation a few minutes later about how messed up Carrie feels he is being and about how jealous she is.

"Come on," He says, being slightly reasonable, "What do you want from me?"
"What do I want from you?!" she pauses.  "Nothing. I don't want anything from you." she lies.  her eyes are glistening with tears.  She leaves the party then, heading out to that 30-under-30 cool party downtown.

She is invited home by Stanny's friend, the one who invited them to the party.  And before she goes, she calls Big to tell him all about it and I guess try to make him jealous?  She's acting out.  She does this a lot.  She does invite Big to take her back, or something?  It's like the middle of the night here.  She waits outside for Big for like 45 minutes and it's 3 in the morning.  Finally, he shows up and they realize that they were waiting in the wrong spots for each other for quite a long while.

Carrie asks him, FINALLY, if he'll date her exclusively and he agrees.  and I barf.  lol.

But.. here.  here is the end of the episode.  and the beginning of their relationship?

I'm honestly not sure.  In the end of the second season she talks about how she was strung along by him for two years and I'm like.. that's really funny counting there.  In the movie, Charlotte says that she and Big dated for 10 years.. that is *really* funny counting, because I seem to remember at least 4 of those years she was with other men, and at one point engaged to another man.

Stay tuned for the next episode next time!  Three's a Crowd!  All about threesomes!  :wolf whistle:
