Season 1 Episode 4 Valley of the Twenty-Something Guys

This is the episode when Carrie and Mr. Big sort of start dating.  Sort of.  He calls it a "thing"-- not a date, a thing.  She let's him define their relationship from the beginning.  The first few scenes involve Carrie and Big running into each other all over the city.  It really is a wonder they didn't know each other before now, for all the bumping into each other they do and mutual friends they didn't know they already had.

But, alas, their first scheduled casual thing, Big calls Carrie's machine to let her know he can't make it.  So, she goes to the restaurant with her friends anyway and complains to Miranda about his flaky nature. Carrie thinks it is due to him being a forty-something man, but I think it is because he learned this flaky behavior is acceptable to women and they put up with it, and he still gets what he wants.  You know, he has his cake and eats it too.  But I digress, again.

At the restaurant, they meet up with these younger men, 20-something guys, Including Skipper, Miranda's guy.

There is some mild queer bating when Skipper is introduced to the young man, Sam, whom Carrie will make out with for the rest of the episode.  I think that they were going to turn him gay, because I think that he ended up gay or bi in the book, but they dropped that plot when they moved away from the book plots.  I am only guessing.  It was a bigger deal in the book, as far as I remember.  Still, kinda weird to introduce two guys and say (in the narration) that they like each other immediately.  It asks way more questions than the show answers.

Mr. Big randomly shows up to make Carrie feel guilty about something.  He could only hang out for an hour, couldn't find her and then when he did find her he said he had to leave.  This just seems like poor wording on his part-- she can hardly feel bad because it took him so long to get into the restaurant.  Also, I think he was mildly jealous because Carrie was in the middle of looking at (male) Sam's tongue ring.  No idea.  Big left, and Carrie was left confused.  Why show up at all if you're just going to leave right away?  But anyway.  to better plots!

Samantha is currently making out with one of the chef's of the restaurant they are at.  Everyone leaves when Male-Sam says that the place is tired.  They go to a cool, hip club full of twenty-something people.  There is drinking and kissing, all night long apparently.

Then Carrie writes her little article, in it asking, what do they see in us?

And cut to the barrage of young men telling her exactly what they see in them.

One of the twenty something guys says:

"Women in their thirties are just so grateful.  It's like every bullshit nice thing you do is like throwing food to the starving"

yep.  Really hits you in the gut, doesn't it?

Other young guys say other things, the underage guy makes an appearance, lightening the mood. But jesus that is fucking sad.

I'm sad now.

D:

Carrie abandons Miranda to go make out with Male-Sam again.  I guess she took a leaf out of Big's book.

Later on, she gets invited to go to a drink thing with Big and is interrupted by Charlotte who calls to tell her that her boyfriend wants to have anal sex with her.  ><  I love this scene.

(fyi, for all you long time fans, the actor who plays the cabbie is the same actor in the movie who drives Miranda when she's begging Carrie for forgiveness)

One by one, the foursome gets picked up by the cab, they drive all over the city, to Charlotte's horror.  she wanted to keep it between her and Carrie, but Carrie insists that she needs all the girl help she can get!

Finally, they are all in the back of the cab, talking Charlotte down from a ledge. I love Samantha here: "Front, back, who cares? A hole is a hole"  :D  She is the best character on the show.  I used to dislike her quite a bit when I first started watching, but she is the most forward thinking character, she is light years (or at least a decade and a half) ahead of her time.  Not really on this issue, cause you know, everyone's different, but she is so open minded, I love her.

Charlotte ends up not having butt sex with her boyfriend.  That's cool, we knew she wouldn't.  So repressed.  ><

Carrie is late for her drink thing, but it doesn't matter because Big has invited someone else dubbed "Mr Marvelous" who is a recent divorcee friend of Big's.  Not cool Mr. Big.  Carrie leaves and goes to make out with her new boy toy Sam.  Good choice.

She decides to go deeper, actually going all the way with him.  She feels good about it.. till she wakes up in the twenty-something apartment.  It is DISGUSTING.  I counted at least 2 near empty boxes of pizza, ALL the dirty dishes, the walls are covered in graffiti, and to top it all off Male-Sam used the last of the toilet paper to make coffee.  D:

She escapes as quickly as she can, decides to buy herself a pair of shoes, to make herself feel better. She runs into Mr Big who is eating brunch with Mr Marvelous at some outdoor cafe.  The interaction between Mr Big and Carrie is bizarre.  I use that word a lot, maybe there is a lot of subtext, but it feels like people don't talk this way.

"Do you want to join us?" Mr Big asks
"Hinge"
"what?"
"5-letter word, to bring together: hinge.  Your cross word puzzle" She starts walking away.
He catches up, says "You know, I would have gotten hinge on my own."
"I have no doubt."

Then he invites her to dinner sometime, she says she doesn't know. She's not good at people puzzles, and he says that they'll go anywhere she wants, just him and her and she says "call me."  So, I guess she was being cute, but it was really... indirect and weird.  I don't know why she is bothering with this man, he isn't available to her.  god.

She should date Brett:
